President Trump first coined the term “fake newz” towards the accomplished and long running media empire of CNN because of the way he felt they were reporting about him. The concept behind “fake newz” is that it deliberately creates outlandish topics or content that generates buzz through disinformation.
One can do a quick check on terms online about this phenomena on sites such as Wikipedia who have below listed the following statement:
The term is also at times used to cast doubt upon legitimate news from an opposing political standpoint, a tactic known as the lying press. The false information is then often reverberated as misinformation in social media, but occasionally finds its way to the mainstream media as well. Fake news is written and published with the intent to mislead in order to damage an agency, entity, or person, and/or gain financially or politically, often using sensationalist, dishonest, or outright fabricated headlines to increase readership, online sharing, and Internet click revenue. In the latter case, it is similar to sensational online “clickbait” headlines and relies on advertising revenue generated from this activity, regardless of the veracity of the published stories. Intentionally misleading and deceptive fake news differs from obvious satire or parody, which is intended to amuse rather than mislead its audience.
Now since President Trump has made this mainstream vernacular it has become the buzzword for anyone online to try to discredit or even mock fans and media outlets. The truth of the matter is that all news no matter how the entity tries has a slight bias depending on the lens reporting it. Even the loveable and admirable first African American President Barack Obama gets ridiculed at times for “fake news”. He was once called a liar on television.
However, when it comes right down to it in the media there is just simply facts. Even this gets muddied when the current President of America creates “alternative facts” which is a sly play on “making things up”. Barack Obama made a statement earlier this year on how the current President’s real goal is to try to run his propaganda even though he is in position of real power to do damage on the minds of people across the world.
The world in the year 2018 has become the biggest entertainment stage which has created news to be the entertainment for the lives of many people. Social media has also created a lane for everyone to be a pundit or critic. Gone are the days of tens of millions of viewers watching a news program and just believing the story at hand. Many in the new generation of this new millennium have no clue about the origins of news that is delivered through entertainment mediums such as television and radio like in the 1930’s-1970’s when very few people questioned outlets(or just didn’t have the medium to voice their opinions as in later years with the internet).
In the video above you could see the real time reporting on the murder of the popular President John F. Kennedy in the 1960’s. There was slow reporting and confirmation from the big 3 at the time which are still here today with ABC, NBC, and CBS. Could you just imagine if this happened today how many different online outlets would have different views and snippets that were captured at different times that were reported. Many people online would be calling a lot of outlets “fake news” due to how today’s fast moving society has reports delivered every second on the minute. It would boil down to when an outlet reported the news and at what point the news would be currently updated by the time it was posted. Then viewers online would have that news mixed in with controversial conspiracy theories by people who would be questioning the reporting.
In the above video, it is very telling how America found out the iconic Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was murdered. In today’s world you can bet huge money within minutes on YouTube there would be videos going into topics about how the media is not telling the whole story. The video you see below is a witness who just this year broke her silence 50 years later.
It’s quite interesting that perhaps in today’s society that woman who saw the murder may have recorded it on her cell phone and put it on a platform such as Instagram for likes and virality. Possibly on YouTube as well since people today are of the belief the outlet is a get rich quick vehicle.
In the above snapshot we see our WWETV Worldwide Instagram account in a back and forth about the lastest drama in hip hop that is Drake vs Pusha T beef in Toronto. A commentator made a statement that a post was made to get views and money(it would be nice for that commentator to explain how one gets money from an Instagram post such as the one posted about Pusha T’s concert in Toronto), but the reality of it is that in today’s climate monetization for things of this nature aren’t what it use to be since there is a plethora of avenues with the same video for when news of this nature breaks out. The people who really make money on Instagram are accounts you see with product placements or selling the latest tummy tea for women trying to get a flat stomach.
Majority of the time outlets like Worldwide Entertainment TV posts items that they believe viewers want to see. It is a fine line in giving into interest and giving into social commentary which most of the times doesn’t get a second look by viewers looking for the next hot topic.
Thus, bringing me back to the original topic of “Fake News”. The reason why it has become a phenomena is that human nature is trained to react to things out of the norm instead of the regular credible content that is not very entertaining. It has now become a rush to get out the latest and hottest news by outlets which may have misinformation due to the time the information was received.
Human nature is to respond to the first news that comes out even if it is wrong info or not verified, but viewers don’t realize their emotional reactions are the reason for this. By the time the real info comes out they have already moved onto the next topic, so at times does it matter really to some? I doubt it as long as they receive their entertainment fix for the day and have the water tank discussion at work for the day. It’s no longer the 20th Century and the way the world operates today originally came from the roots of social media with the internet technologies of YouTube, myspace, Instagram, and podcasts. It’s up to the viewers to stop “fake news”, but won’t stop is the desire of people to be entertained.
If this were not the case then how does one explain the current administration in the White House? The man who is the free leader of the world came out of “reality tv” which is really just loosely scripted entertainment and a form of “fake reality”. He won the presidency over the veteran politician Hilary Clinton because he entertained the audience with his “alternative facts” that Clinton couldn’t shake as “fake news”. This very real scenario proves the point I made above people want to be entertained more than take in the boring and predictable truth. This is the year of 2018 unfortunately.
This has been Venom once again giving you that stinging truth.
