Attorneys and family react to R. Kelly’s new sentencing in federal court

A federal judge handed singer R. Kelly a 20-year prison sentence for his convictions of child pornography and the enticement of minors for sex but said he will serve nearly all of the sentence simultaneously with a 30-year sentence imposed last year on racketeering charges.

R. Kelly (born Robert Sylvester Kelly) is a well-known American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known for his R&B and soul music, and has released numerous successful albums over the course of his career, including “12 Play,” “TP-2.com,” and “Chocolate Factory.”

However, R. Kelly has also been embroiled in controversy for several years. In recent years, he has faced numerous allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse, including allegations that he engaged in sexual relationships with underage girls. He was arrested on several charges related to these allegations and was found guilty on multiple charges in September 2021, including racketeering, sexual exploitation of a child, bribery, and kidnapping. He is currently awaiting sentencing.
