In 2020 we have encountered riots across the globe for racial equality, but in 1992 the United States riot of Los Angeles made history. As this year, a recording led to protests after a person was seen being abused by police. George Holliday was the person who filmed on March 3, 1991 from his apartment balcony in L.A the beating of Rodney King.
The trial saw the acquittal of four police officers which led to deadly riots.
Holliday referenced the significance of his camera and how it sparked a debate for justice as what is happening today.
“I hope this video camera inspires people to use their power to record events that they find troubling.” He added, “Don’t be afraid to use it.”
But what is crazy to me is that the riots in LA only hit LA. The riots most recently happened all over the United States. The hope is that the voices are being heard and that actions are being taken to change policies and laws that oppress blacks or any other race.
