Halle Berry received criticism for attempting to play a transgender man in a film, but now states she is no longer considering playing the role. People found out through an Instagram Live conversation Friday with hairstylist Christin Brown. “That’s a woman,” Berry told Brown. “That’s a female story. It changes to a man, but I want to understand the why and the how of that, you know?”

Berry apologized in a statement posted to social media Monday night.

“Over the weekend I had the opportunity to discuss my consideration of an upcoming role as a transgender man, and I’d like to apologize for those remarks,” Berry said. “As a cisgender woman, I now understand that I should not have considered this role, and that the transgender community should undeniably have the opportunity to tell their own stories.”

“I am grateful for the guidance and critical conversation over the past few days and I will continue to listen, educate and learn from this mistake,” continued Berry, 53. “I vow to be an ally in using my voice to promote better representation on-screen, both in front of and behind the camera.”

Halle Berry became the first Black woman to win the Oscar for lead actress in 2002, for her role in “Monster’s Ball.”
