Legendary Atlanta producer, Jermaine Dupri, created quit the stir when he recently made comments about female hip hop being dominated by strippers. His issue was the content of the music not being diversified in 2019 coming from women. Top artists such as Cardi B and down south female rapper legend Trina had their own take on the situation.
Jermaine Dupri has since made a new concept of the #SoSoDefFemaleCypher in reaction to the backlash.
The irony of the conversation is that some fans, female rappers, and critics felt Jermaine Dupri was out of line with his comment although he was the producer to gave the industry hip hop’s first platinum selling female rapper.
Da Brat broke records with her debut album “Funkdafied” and she has come to the defense of her producer. She believes Dupri was taken out of context. Da Brat says his hot take is part of a master plan to start a discussion that’s a long time coming.
Brat states that Dupri’s comment calling today’s mainstream rapper’s “strippers” was in response to the interviewer asking for his thoughts on Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, and Megan Thee Stallion.
“That’s not what he said. Go back and look at the whole interview. Apparently you didn’t hear the question before when they asked him to choose between Nicki and Cardi.”Da BRAT
“I love Jermaine Dupri, he’s very smart at what he does and there’s always a method to his madness,” Brat added before noting that Dupri’s words were “absolutely taken out of context.”
She continued saying “He knows what he’s doing. He’s a genius. You should be thankful that the conversation is even started now, all female rappers, because now the focus is absolutely on us…new, seasoned, legends. All that”.
