Da Brat is one of the most successful female rappers in the history of hip hop, but states Left Eye was not too fond of her.
It’s almost nineteen years since the passing of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes passed away in a car accident. Her legend lives on through her work with the iconic TLC, but Da Brat provides insight into how she may have felt threatened by her come up.
In an interview with Too Fab, Da Brat spoke about when she was breaking through on the Kriss Kross album and her debut album of Funkdafied. “Oh man, Left Eye was super dope but I kind of think because she was JD’s [Dupri’s] first artist and they used to—they grew up together and I think she lived with him at one point,” Da Brat said. “Like I think when I came along—I don’t think she liked me too much. Cause I think she felt like JD may have been replacing, trying to replace, you know, her with me, which wasn’t the case, but she wasn’t too fond of me.”
Eventually things became cordial between Da Brat and Left Eye. The two women would end up working on the same song as Angie Martinez, Lil Kim, and Missy Elliot for “Not Tonight”.
“We were all like with one accord and just enjoyed it — this big luau, like party. It was nice.”
Da Brat looks forward to making new music in the present and future however, as she revealed she is back in the studio.
“I’m working on a project right now,” she continued. “I don’t know the title, but I’m trying a lot of different things. So when it’s time, I’ll let you guys know.”
