That being said, it’s safe to say that Evan Peters is no stranger to playing disturbed characters, so it’s no surprise that he’s been cast as the protagonist Jeffrey Dahmer in the currently trending show, “Dahmer”, on Netflix.
Who even is “Dahmer”? Jeffrey Dahmer was an American serial killer and sex offender who took the lives of 17 victims between 1978 and 1991. In addition to the murders, Dahmer was also guilty of necrophilia, cannibalism, and keeping body parts as souvenirs. He was arrested in 1991 and sentenced to life in prison where a fellow inmate eventually killed him in 1994. Dahmer’s crimes shocked and horrified the nation and his case continues to be one of the most fascinating and disturbing in American history. It is believed that Dahmer had a dissociative disorder which allowed him to dissociate himself from the reality of his actions. This, combined with his sociopathic tendencies, allowed Dahmer to commit his crimes without remorse. It is believed that Dahmer’s victims represented a way for him to exert power and control over others, the power that he was stripped from in his wavering childhood, as well as a way to satisfy his own twisted desires.
Evan Peters has the perfect combination of charisma and creepiness to pull off the role of the serial killer. Nevertheless, portraying a man-eating serial killer is not an easy role to muster, even for Evan. Peters did a lot of research to prepare for the role of Jeffrey Dahmer. He read books and watched documentaries about Dahmer and he talked to people who knew him. Peters also worked with a coach to help him understand Dahmer’s mental state.
The show Dahmer was filmed in various locations in Wisconsin, including the city of Milwaukee and the town of West Allis. Most of the filming took place in the basement of Jeffrey Dahmer’s childhood home, which has since been torn down.
The Director of the Netflix show even revealed that Evan Peters stayed in character for months to prepare for the role. Now that’s dedication!
Evan Peters has said good things to say about Dahmer. He believes that Dahmer was a misunderstood individual and that people should learn from his story. Peters also believes that Dahmer was a victim of his environment and that if he had been raised in a different setting, he may have never turned out to be a killer.
“Dahmer was a monster. What he did was monstrous. But, at the same time, you can’t help but feel sorry for him. He was a distraught and disturbed individual.” – Evan Peters
