The history of television goes back decades, but there are certain tv shows that transcend time. The question previously was whether or not, iconic Norman Lear, could still attract viewers with his groundbreaking tv series from the 1970’s. The questions lingered such as whether or not content from decades ago could still resonate with a modern audience.

Then there were was the discussion about if there would be original scripts used and how some of the dialogue may offend the current politically correct landscape. All things considered, “Live In Front A Studio Audience” with “All In The Family” and “The Jeffersons” was successful and that ensured a repeat performance which has brought us to today.

Jamie Foxx was unavailable this time around and the producers of Norman Lear and Jimmy Kimmel decided on finding an alternate show for “The Jeffersons”. The classic “Good Times” got the nod for a live presentation of one of its episodes. It is believed it will be a Christmas themed episode that originally aired in the 1970’s.

For the uninitiated, the original broadcast series was groundbreaking for several reasons. A spinoff of the tv series, Maude, viewers were already acquainted with Florida Evans. Although certain aspects of the backstory were tweaked (such as The Evans now residing in Chicago in the spinoff instead of New York), the fans knew what was coming.

They originally did not want a father on the show, but Esther Rolle, who was the star of the show and most accomplished demanded to the writers that a husband be written into the series. She speaks about it below.

Bernadette Stanis also told the world that Esther Rolle insisted that there had to be a positive father figure for the African American audience of the time. Speaking with Steve Harvey she describes the importance of Esther Rolle’s demands.

The program is significant for its decidedly different view, not only of Black family life, but American family life in general. Unlike the innocuous images served up in early televisions shows such as Father Knows Best and Julia, Good Times interjected relevancy and realism into prime-time television by dealing with the pressing issues of the day.
