Popular British muralist Richard Wilson set his eyes on creating a mural for one of Hollywood’s more beloved figures. He’s done celebrity murals in the past of American funk and jazz composer Roy Ayers, Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo and soul legend Stevie Wonder.
Surprisingly, Philadelphia which is home to the “Rocky Balboa” statue never had a landmark for its most famous rapper turned actor. Will Smith was plastered now on the wall of Gevurtz Furniture at 4545 W. Girard Ave., posed in an allusion to Kehinde Wiley’s presidential portrait of Barack Obama, however with a pair of Jordans and more resembling the Fresh Prince in the summer of 2018.
The project was in conjunction with Mural Arts Philadelphia and Global Leadership Academy Charter School who helped to get the site and offer community engagement on the project.
Will Smith recently was also honored by having a studio named after him at the new Tyler Perry Studio location in Atlanta.
