Illinois celebrated Muhammad Ali Day for the first time on Jan. 17, 2022.
Senate Bill 564 was signed into law in August of last year making January 17, Muhammad Ali’s birthday, a holiday in the state according to ABC News.
It now joins the list of commemorative holidays in Illinois.
“Muhammad Ali set a fantastic example for us all by showing how to be dedicated to our passions and courageous in our convictions,” said Senator Laura Ellman, D-Naperville. “Through both his athletic career and his philanthropic work, he spent a lifetime working for the betterment of society as a whole.”
Ali died in 2016 and would have been 80 years old on Monday.
