As we have seen over the last few weeks, lists can be very interesting in terms of drumming up conversation. The top 50 rappers list still has people creating lists as just on Monday, Funk Flex gave his opinion on the greatest rappers alive with Jay Z at the top of his list.
The long running and esteemed Rolling Stone has now joined in on the fun, but have given a list for the 100 greatest singers of all-time, but there seems to be a lot of people scratching their heads at their list.
The top singer of all time is not really in question or being criticized as the title goes to the “Queen Of Soul”, Aretha Franklin. What has people up in arms is the placement of the “King Of Rock ‘N Roll” Elvis Presley. He is ranked at number three only behind Franklin and Ray Charles.
Mary J. Blige who is known as the “Queen Of Hip Hop Soul” comes in the 100th slot and she was recently announced as receiving a role in the forthcoming Aretha Franklin movie “Respect”.
Michael Jackson rounds out the top 25 and just beats out one of his idols Jackie Wilson. Jemele Hill started a heated discussion on Twitter about Elvis Presley beating out Whitney Houston by leaps and bounds on Rolling Stone’s list at number 34.
The conversation is not only on Twitter, but has also reached Instagram. One account takes a different approach to the topic stating one needs to understand the creative staff’s mindset over at Rolling Stone.
Wow! Y’ALL SHOWLL IS HOT!!!! I do have to ask why do you care? You knew your weren’t going to get your true props or representation. It’s Rolling Stone for God’s sake. Not The Root or Ebony Jr.. It was created in 2010. This is a “ME” list. What I mean by that is, put yourself in the mind of one of the creatives over there at the magazine. Most do not look like you.Artemus Gordon
One has to know that if the list was accurate they would not see themselves aka “ME” in it. They know they would not be represented equally. So they had to get ridiculous and be selfish or outlandish with the choices and placements. Let’s start with some notables who are NOT on the list: Ella, Sinatra, Barry, Lani Hall, Phil Collins, MINNIE RIPERTON, Dinah Washington & Maurice White to name a few.
The blasphemy and hypocrisy of the placement though is mind numbing. Elvis in the Top 5 and better than MARVIN? Or Whitney and Mariah at numbers 34 & 79 respectively. Add that Christina Aguilera being ranked higher than Mimi!🤢🤮 In some cases there are Karaoke singers ranked higher than the people they’re copying. I think you should attempt to do your own list because if I do mine, Rev. Leon Lonnie Love has a chance of making a top slot because I gotta feeling everything’s gonna be alright.
