The real life drama with Jussie Smollett rivaled the night time soap opera of Empire earlier this year. He made headline news when it appeared Jussie Smollett was a victim of domestic terrorism and racism, but that storyline was changed when police flipped the script and said they believed Smollett staged the whole crime scene.
People speculated as rumors came out that he did the PR stunt to increase his celebrity status. There is still a debate on what exactly went on with Smollett this past winter, but at the moment things have settled in terms of the police misconduct which might have jeopardized the whole scenario.
The debacle led many to believe it would hurt the future of the hit show Empire. However, this was not to be as in late April, Empire was renewed for a sixth season but it was reported that Smollett’s return was unlikely. “By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for season 6, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to Empire,” Fox said in a statement.
There are reports from Variety, that those in charge of the show have plans for Smollett’s character’s return to the show in some form by the second half of the season. There seemed to be a split among the cast and production in terms of Smollett’s innocence with his fellow actors mostly siding with him. No final decision has officially been made on the future of the Jamal Lyon character.
