Lauryn Hill’s Daughter Gets Backlash For “WLM” Shirt With Kanye West

Selah Marley obviously carries the name of a legendary family and her mother Lauryn Hill is no name either, but this also comes with pressure from society.

Kanye West is known for setting trends in the fashion world, but the billionaire mogul may turned some people with his latest clothing line.  His upcoming YZYSZN9 collection has the tagline of “White Lives Matter.” The controversial Candace Owens also made an appearance in support of the surprise Yeezy fashion show.

As custom with Kanye West and social media, the rap star got backlash from celebrities ranging from Van Lathan to Jaden Smith. The son of Will Smith said, “I Had To Dip. I Don’t Care Who’s It Is If I Don’t Feel The Message I’m Out,” Jaden tweeted. He added, “True Leaders Lead. Black Lives Matter.”

Candice Owens was not the only celebrity that fans noticed wearing the “White Lives Matter” T-shirt. The daughter of the legendary Lauryn Hill caught the eyes of viewers and social media accounts. Selah Marley, who models, was featured in the surprise Paris fashion show wearing one of the custom WLM shirts.

The classic album title “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” was used as a meme in response to the reaction of Selah Marley.

One Twitter follower astutely reminded someone that Kanye did not force her to wear the t-shirt.

It will be interesting to see if her famous mother speaks on the topic. In August of 2020, Selah Marley made some remarks about her upbringing that some said did not show her mother in the best of light.

In the since-deleted IGTV video, the 20-year-old model detailed the dual long-term effects of her father, Rohan Marley, not being around a lot as well as her mother Hill physically disciplining her and her siblings. But Marley posted a follow-up clip titled “clarity” the next day to set the record straight to her 165,000 Instagram followers that she spoke from a personal “place of healing” and did not intend for viewers to contact her parents with hateful comments.

At the time, Lauryn Hill addressed the issue after social media came at her daughter.

“Uhhhh black people, what??? Selah has every right toexpress herself, I encourage it, but she also got the discipline that black children get because we are held to a different standard. The discipline was seen through the lens of a young child who also had no place to reconcile me as mom, and me as a larger than life public figure…. If I am guilty of anything it is disciplining in anger, not in disciplining,” she wrote in an eight-slide Instagram gallery. “The toxic venom I ingested for standing on principle, and confronting systemic racism far BEFORE it was the thing to say or do (everything you NOW celebrate everyone for!)–the people who called me CRAZY and have yet to apologize and say ‘oh yeah, we were wrong’, OF COURSE that seeped into my home, it was intended to.”

Check out more of the message in the post below.

It should be noted that Kanye West’s children are of a mixed race similar to the grandfather of Sela Marley.  It will be interesting to see how Kanye handles the backlash by social media as it appears this may be another “Slavery Was A Choice” moment.
