Lord Jamar recently upset a portion of hip hop fans with his beliefs concerning female rappers. He has also become known for his sometimes outlandish comments on VladTV and his own podcast “Yanadameen Godcast” with rapper Rah Digga.
However, this being #OldSchoolSaturday , let’s take a trip down memory lane when Lord Jamar was known for his lyrics and being a member of the rap group “Brand Nubian”. The group consisted of three emcees, Grand Puba, Sadat X, and Lord Jamar. About.com placed the group on its list of the “25 Greatest Rap Groups of All Time”. They had hits that were placed on the Billboard charts in 1991 with the single “Slow Down” and in 1992 with the very controversial song called “Punks Jump Up To Get Beatdown” for lyrics that were “homophobic”.
I can freak, fly, flow, fuck up a faggot/I don’t understand their ways; I ain’t down with gaysSadat X
The song reached the number 77 position on the top 100 billboard charts in 1992. The song’s lyrics would later be altered on re-releases. So, Lord Jamar knows a thing or two about successful rap groups and has been around decades to have seen hip hop artists before and after his time.
This leads to a debate he had with DJ Vlad over his list about the 50 greatest rap groups of all-time. Jamar describes his viewpoint on what the list should actually be below. One major issue he has is Vlad putting the Beastie Boys over Run DMC.
Lord Jamar’s viewpoint is much more aligned with historic facts, but that is yours truly, THE VENOM, opinion of the list. This has been another #OldSchoolSaturday exclusive article!!
