Mahershala Ali to play boxing legend Jack Johnson in HBO Series according to Variety.
The six-part series is titled “Unruly.” will be a raw and truthful story about one of the greatest boxers of all-time. Jack Johnson is the first ever Black heavyweight boxing champion who reigned supreme at the turn of the 20th century. The series will present to a new generation the greatness of the sports icon and the trials and tribulations he had to endure because of a racial divide that was only a few decades removed from slavery.
The series will be based on the PBS documentary “Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson,” which was produced and directed by Ken Burns, as well as the accompanying book by Geoffrey C. Ward. It was first put into development at HBO back in 2013 with Beau Willimon originally attached to write.
Tom Hanks will executive produce via Playtone along with Gary Goetzman.
