Billboard celebrates the top 125 artists in its history. The Beatles are ranked as the greatest in billboard chart history with Hot 100 and Billboard 200 since their U.S. breakthrough in 1964. The Beatles have the most No. 1 hits in the 61-year history of the Hot 100, with 20. Their closest competitor is Mariah Carey, with 18 and she is the top ranking solo female artist on the list.

The platform decided using a formula that would be a level playing field for all the eras as much as possible. Mariah Carey got ranked at number four due to 18 Hot 100 No. 1s, the most among soloists, and six Billboard 200 leaders. She also holds the records for the most consecutive years with a No. 1 Hot 100 placement (11, from 1990 through 2000) and for most total weeks at No. 1 (79).

Groups seemed to be the dominant forces at the very top of the list. Rolling Stone rocked the second position. They were able to grab nine No. 1 Billboard 200 albums and eight No. 1 Hot 100 songs. Plus, the band boasts 37 top 10 Billboard 200 albums dominating other artists.

Elton John is number 3 and the “Material Girl” Madonna lands at number five. The rest of the list rounds out the top ten with Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, Taylor Swift, Stevie Wonder, and Chicago respectively. You can check out the details of the list at the link below.

Mariah Carey also commented on the achievement. She expressed gratefulness for having the opportunity to do what she loves at a top level. She told Billboard, “When I look back on the songs that I’ve written that have become part of people’s lives, that’s what makes me the most proud. “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” the constant presence at Christmastime — to feel that as someone who loves Christmas so much, I can’t even explain. And then I think about “Hero,” which I performed at the Tribute to Heroes during the 9/11 tragedy: It was a song that I had written and debuted on a Thanksgiving special, and it went to No. 1 and has become kind of synonymous with me. I don’t think many people realize I wrote that song, either — because most people aren’t necessarily writing their songs. But I wouldn’t feel complete as an artist if I didn’t”.
