The legendary Aretha Franklin will have her story told on the big screen. Jennifer Hudson will play the “Queen Of Soul” and now the “Queen of Hip Hop Soul” Mary J. Blige will portray Dinah Washington, a prominent figure in the jazz scene during the 1950s.
Producers are Scott Bernstein (Straight Outta Compton) and multiple Grammy nominated producer Harvey Mason Jr. (Dreamgirls), who has produced music for both Aretha Franklin and Jennifer Hudson. Aaron L. Gilbert and Jason Cloth are executive producers.
According to Deadline, Mary J. Blige will round out the cast along with Forest Whitaker ( who will play Reverend CL Franklin aka the man with the “Million-Dollar Voice,” Aretha’s father and manager), Marlon Wayans, and the young Aretha Franklin will be played by Skye Dakota Turner (Broadway’s Young Anna Mae in Tina: The Tina Turner Musical).
