Trinidad is the home of the most popular “Carnival” and Michael B. Jordan is accused of cultural appropriation of its alcohol and buzz words.
Lori Harvey being a supportive girlfriend decided to help promote her boyfriend’s product, but mot likely didn’t expect some of the reactions. Fans notices the description of the brand on the box with the following statement, “Derives from the Antellian Creole French term meaning ‘daybreak,’ J’OUVERT originated in the pre-dawn streets of Trinidad, as celebration of emancipation combined with Carnival season to serve as the festival informal commencements. Crafted on those same islands, J’OUVERT Rum is a tribute to the party start.”
Michael B. Jordan owns rum made in Trinidad? (I’m assuming “those same islands” mean Trinidad and Tobago? idk chile) pic.twitter.com/ZGDVIGG01Y

As people looked more into the product line via trademark filings, it showed that Michael B. Jordan may have been insensitive to the wording and meaning of J’ouvert.
THREAD.
ICYMI Michael B Jordan has launched a rum brand called J'ouvert & has filed a trademark for the word J'ouvert. In his filing he says the word "has no meaning in any language" I am livid.
Black Capitalism is still Capitalism.

The news spread and got to a government official who is looking into the situation. The Minister of Trade and Industry in Trinidad and Tobago, Paula Gopee-Scoon, made a statement saying, “The first thing is to gather the information to see if it is in fact so. Then working together with the intellectual property office of the Ministry of the Attorney General, we’ll do the necessary investigation…”

This is who Scott is for anyone that doesn’t know. He owns a place called “Las Lap” in NYC. Michael B Jordan is a friend of his.
Scott and his Las Lap business partners have long been stealing names from carnival to give to their drinks, food & other things. Y’all now catch it. https://t.co/NddBEEwpmX pic.twitter.com/12gL4K5N6C— 𝒮 🐬🌴✊🏽 (@mcintosh_sian) June 20, 2021
