Kanye West has been on a rant against the music industry and how it operates with artists. At the core of his dispute is the lack of owning his masters and having full rights to his catalog in terms of future financial gains that he could pass on to his children.

Kanye stated he wants to change the music industry forever by empowering artists in recording contracts and more. In the 1980’s, Michael Jackson paved the way for artists owning catalogs when he purchased the ATV music publishing catalog for $46.5 million in August 1985.

At the time, Michael Jackson was at the absolute peak of his career as “Thriller” being on shelves for three years by that point was still selling huge and on its way to becoming the most sold artist album ever.  Michael Jackson showed he was a shrewd businessman with outbidding record companies and Paul McCartney for the catalogs of the Beatles, Little Richard,   and more
