ATLANTA — A metro Atlanta mother has been indicted for murder in the death of her young son reports 11Alive News.

The boy’s body was recovered from the Chattahoochee River on July 1. Firefighters shooting a PSA spotted the child’s body floating down the river near Paces Mill Park.

According to an indictment, the boy was named Faheem. His age is unclear.

According to court documents, the boy’s mother, Breyanla Cooper, has been charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and concealing a death.

Court documents say Cooper asphyxiated her son on or around June 26.

Cooper was arrested on July 2 after DNA tied her to the boy’s remains.

Criminal defense attorney and legal analyst Ester Panitch said that now, the district attorney will have to decide whether to seek the death penalty in the case.

“The state has to file intent of its notice to seek the death penalty so we would see notice relatively soon if they intended to do that,” Panitch said.

Cooper is being held at the Cobb County jail.
