The popular hip hop artist, Nicki Minaj, after careful examination, has cancelled a scheduled performance in Saudi Arabia next week, citing her support for the rights of women and the LGBT community.
She was going to be the headline in Jeddah, but there has been a vocal community that wanted her to protest against the nation’s lack of human rights for women.
When the concert was first announced, many of her fans questioned if she would be allowed to give her real performance of revealing outfits and explicit lyrics in the land.
Saudi Arabia has been trying to ease restrictions on entertainment and to encourage growth in its arts sector.
After careful reflection, I have decided to no longer move forward with my scheduled concert at Jeddah World Fest. While I want nothing more than to bring my show to fans in Saudi Arabia, after better educating myself on the issues, I believe it is important for me to make clear my support for the rights of women, the LGBTQ community and freedom of expressionNicki Minaj – Associated Press
Asap Rocky is reportedly facing mistreatment in Sweden and Nicki Minaj went on twitter to voice her displeasure with other countries lack of human rights at times. She made mention of an incident that occurred in Jamaica.
I performed in Jamaica before & when i got off the stage I was surrounded by police with guns drawn. They were ready 2 take me to jail b/c they said I forgot to bleep a couple curses…. I could make one mistake & go to jail in a diff country where women have no rights. #FreeAsap
