#OldSchoolSaturday – Snoop Reflects on 25 Years Of DoggyStyle Album

n

November 23rd in the year 1993 saw one of the most highly anticipated album debuts in hip hop history. Snoop Dogg’s name was buzzing in the music industry after being on the critically acclaimed and infamously popular “The Chronic” album by Dr. Dre. Needless to say Snoop Dogg lived up to the hype and many say he has been chasing the greatness of his original album ever since.

Snoop’s rise came at a time when Los Angeles was also buzzing in the entertainment world with movies like “Boyz N The Hood” and in world news with the LA riots after the Rodney King verdict that acquitted cops of a police brutality situation upset the nation.

Hip hop was also coming of age as the golden era of the 80’s with stars like Rakim, Slick Rick, and Chuck D were seeing an influx of newer breed. What Snoop help bring to the game was his laid back G Funk music that was clearly inspired by the music of the 1970’s and also the fashion.

Snoop rivaled the infamous O.J. case in terms of having a big name celebrity in California being accused of murder. Broadus, at the age of 24, was acquitted in February 1996 (along with bodyguard McKinley “Malik” Lee), of first- and second-degree murder charges in the shooting death of a gang member Philip Woldemariam at a Los Angeles-area park. As the jury was deadlocked on remaining voluntary manslaughter charges, a mistrial was declared. MTV broadcast the reading of the verdict, after which Snoop Dogg rolled off in a Rolls-Royce with a driver. Snoop and Lee had maintained that the victim had been perceived as a mortal threat.

Michael Jackson was also starting to appear in the news for charges and Tupac Shakur was in deep problems after shooting two off duty police officers. Hip hop was being under attack for its messages and impact on the youth. It led to some rappers defending the artform such as Ice Cube and Scarface.

It was only poetic justice that Snoop Dogg teamed up with Tupac for the song and music video “2 Of Amerikka’s Most Wanted” that illustrated all eyes being on the two young men of hip hop lore.

It is not exaggeration to say that Snoop Dogg had an album that impacted music and hip hop the same way Nas’ Illmatic would do around the same time period. Ironically, Nas went online to give praise to Snoop’s debut album’s 25th anniversary.

The song that stood out on the album that helped to market liquor beyond belief was the single “Gin & Juice” which illustrated the party life in Long Beach. However, before that classic joint we were asked the question by Snoop. What’s My Name??

25 years later after his album debut Calvin Broadus has definitely left his mark worldwide as the iconic Snoop Dogg from the world of hip hop who helped shape 90’s hip hop and put an undeniable stamp for Westcoast rap’s contributions to the evolution of hip hop.

This has been The Venom with the straight truth!
