Al Pacino and Robert Deniro are iconic and groundbreaking actors in Hollywood. They took their roles in the classic “Godfather” and made it once in a lifetime. Some consider these two actors as the greatest of all time and even they understand their greatness. Pacino states in an interview with GQ that De Niro’s performance in Raging Bull is one of the “greatest performances in film history, beyond belief.”
The Irishman film is about to be released and the two men sat down with GQ and revealed some interesting facts about Scarface.
“I remember we were on the street one night,” reflects De Niro, prefacing his tale with an “I could be wrong.” “You were considering who to do it, what director. I was saying you should do it with Brian [De Palma] of the choices you have. If you don’t do it, I’m going to do it, cause I wanted to do it.” Pacino jumps in, claiming that Scarface was originally plotted to be a collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro. “They were thinking about it,” says Al. “I didn’t know that Marty and Bob were interested in it.”
The situation still would have most likely called for Pacino as the iconic Scarface because he fell in love with the Howard Hanks original version from 1932 after watching it. This affection ended up having his agent making the dream become a reality. De Palma was chosen and Pacino believed in the long run it was for the best. “He had his own way of doing things that made it different. It really made that film.”
