Today marks the birthday of Cheryl James of the legendary Salt ‘N Pepa rap group who broke records for women in hip hop in the 80’s and 90’s. Now Cheryl James (“Salt”), Sandra Denton (“Pepa”), and Deidra Roper (“DJ Spinderella”). It would also most likely include the original DJ of the group Latoya Hansen (Vicious) who was replaced by Spinderella.
The biopic will be produced by another iconic woman of hip hop in Queen Latifah through her Flavor Unit Entertainment company. Queen Latifah was also around when Salt ‘N Pepa took the hip hop world by storm with the song “Shake Ya Thang” with the acid wash cut out pants setting trends.
The direction of the biopic will be the work of Latifah and Shakim Compere who will be executive producers along with co-execs Andy Hume, Dionne Harmon, and James “Jimmy” Maynes.” Salt ‘N Pepa came at a time when their sexuality was unique for its time before the days of Lil’ Kim and Foxy Brown who would come years later when they dropped songs like “Push It”.
The two women were documented in 2007 for a season on VH1 for their reality show “The Salt ‘N Pepa” show. It showed fans what the legendary female rappers were up to after being disbanded years earlier. The women were also outspoken about females expressing themselves in society with songs like “Expression” and “Let’s Talk About Sex”.
There is also drama to be told with the tumultuous marriage of Treach and Pepa that may be covered. Their hits “Push It,” “Whatta Man,” “Let’s Talk About Sex,” “None of Your Business,” and “Champagne,” were all nominated for Grammys, and in 1995 they took home the Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group award for “None of Your Business.”
