One of the most successful hip hop acts from the 80’s and 90’s are now beefing. Salt N Pepa hit the hip hop scene in the late 80’s with classic hits such as Push It and Expression. They went on to win numerous awards and become one of the top selling female hip hop acts ever.
Spinderella (Deidra Muriel Roper) who is the deejay in the trio, has come out to expose the other members for allegedly robbing her of royalties. Spin states the ‘Best of’ album, released in 1999 is the genesis of Salt (Cheryl James) and Pepa (Sandra Jacqueline Denton) of stealing money from her. According to the lawsuit, Roper says she was promised one third of the royalties for the record, and even got a phone call telling her she would be getting $125k. She claims til this day she has not received any of it
According to TMZ, Spin says Salt-N-Pepa cheated her out of being on the VH1 TV show that documented the group’s rise to fame. In the suit, she says she was promised one third of the group’s fee for the show — and even though she got an occasional guest spot, she got way less than one-third. Salt N Pepa according to Spin also didn’t compensate her at all for the group’s appearance at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards.
The biggest accusation thrown at Salt N Pepa by Spinderella is the lack of pay from the last decade over royalties. Spin says she was informed by SoundExchange (company that collects and distributes royalties to artists), informed her that her group received more than $600,000 in royalties. Spinderella has received ZERO of that payment allegedly.
