The murder of George Floyd caused outrage throughout the world and led to daily protests all summer across the United States. It became a hot topic and touchy subject as new eyes were put on police brutality and social injustice.
Now the world is baffled at the ruling of the judge overseeing the proceedings of the George Floyd case. It was announced that the third-degree murder charges against Derek Chauvin, George Floyd’s killer, were dropped today.
Derek Chauvin, a former police officer, was responsible for the killing of Floyd, kneeling on the back of his neck for nearly nine minutes and cutting off his airway.
Chauvin was charged with third-degree murder, second-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter days after Floyd’s death. As reported by Reuters, Hennepin County judge, Peter A. Cahill, stayed the dismissal of Chauvin’s third-degree murder charge for five days so that the state could appeal his ruling.
He also denied motions to dismiss the aiding and abetting charges against the three other officers, who were on the scene during Floyd’s death – Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane.
