Today(July 23rd) marks the birthday of Toronto rapper Houdini who passed away untimely. Toronto hip hop artist Thirty3 aka Mr Trenches reminisces on his friend & the impact he made on the city along with Pressa in recent years.

Hou, as he was often called, rapped about his life in Driftwood, his drive to succeed and his need to do it all on his own terms. In one of his first breakout songs, “Late Nights,” released in 2018 with Burna Bandz on the album Northside Jane, he asks listeners: How you gonna shine if you ain’t gonna put in time? He was also featured on his friend NorthSideBenji’s hit track “Levels.” Houdini opens his verse with the line I’m tryna get me a milli and take all my bros out the ghetto. Both songs later went certified gold in Canada; “Late Nights” has more than nine million views on YouTube and an additional 6.5 million listens on Spotify, while “Levels” has 4.5 million YouTube views.

He eventually collected more than 140,000 followers; his fans called themselves “Houligans.” Between Apple, Spotify and YouTube, he was likely making tens of thousands of dollars on each of his top songs. At one point, he sent Kim a screenshot of his first big payout, texting: “Bout to be the first multimillionaire in the family, sis. For Us.”
