In recent years, Hollywood has been trying to incorporate more women into leading roles with empowering images for little girls everywhere. Hollywood has also seen an upswing in popularity with black superheroes with the huge success of Black Panthers and also the television series Black Lightning.
Last year it was announced that Javicia Leslie would become the CW’s new “Batwoman” replacing Kate Kane. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Leslie described the historical significance of her position.
“I wanted to be a Black superhero. You don’t get to see that that often. And then a month later, I become the first Black Batwoman, so I think that that’s [fate],” she marveled. “It really hits the nail on the head when it’s like, speak your dreams, speak your affirmations and truly just know that whatever you truly want to do, and you go towards it, it can happen.”
The official trailer for the series in its new season starting January 17th is in the video below.
