Kevin Durant played a valiant Game 5, but he succumbed to a torn Achilles. It might have inspired the Warriors to continue the defense of their NBA title in Toronto as they went on to avoid elimination making the series 3 games to 2 for the Raptors.
Durant is scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday to determine the severity of the injury, but all signs point to an Achilles tear.
The Warriors had to rely on the squad for victory without Kevin Durant. They pulled out a 106-105 win at Scotiabank Arena, a win that was bittersweet for the two-time NBA Finals MVP. Following the win, KD posted the following on his Instagram story:
“Dub nation gonna be loud as fuck for Game 6. I’m hurting deep in the soul right now I can’t lie but seeing my brothers get this win was like taking a shot of tequila, I got new life lol. #dubs”Durant
“It’s an Achilles injury,” Warriors general manager Bob Myers said after the game, while holding back tears, according to ESPN. “I don’t know the extent of it. He’ll have an MRI tomorrow. Prior to coming back he went through four weeks with a medical team, and it was thorough, and it was experts and multiple MRIs and multiple doctors, and we felt good about the process.”
Since Kevin Durant went down to injury earlier in the playoffs, there have been some people who have questioned his heart. DeMarcus Cousins had a few choice words about it in a post game interview. The mother of Durant has now also come to the defense of her son.
For ALL of you who question my son as a Man, question his Heart, question his Integrity and question his LOVE for the game of basketball, you DON’T know him. He has a heart of a true Warrior! This too shall pass. God Bless you ALL.Wanda Durant
There has been rumblings about the Toronto audience’s reaction to Durant going down and some are calling it “classless”. Toronto understood the meaning behind Durant not being able to play and it removing another key piece of Golden State Warriors defending their championship.
Golden State’s Stephen Curry, who spent time as a kid living in Toronto when his dad played for the Raptors in 1999 to 2002, was surprised by the fan response.
“You understand this is about an individual, a human being and not, ‘Oh, shoot he’s out, he’s hurt, we won the championship.’ That was probably their initial thought and you hate to see that when a guy’s going through pain like that. I just hope that ugliness doesn’t show itself again as we go forward in this series.”
Drake, who is the global ambassador for the Toronto Raptors, has not been shy about his trash talking during this series. He even trolled Kevin Durant in one of the games this series with a hoodie with the Home Alone character of Kevin. However, on this night Drake showed concern for Durant’s injury and patted him on his shoulder as he passed him walking to the locker room.
Drake went on Instagram to wish Kevin Durant the best and letting his followers know that was his only concern last night.
Was tough for any of us to even enjoy that game tonight after seeing this transpire. Praying for our brother. That’s my only concern tonight is your well being. “The game needs me” is an understatement when it comes to 35. Please wish the best for this true warrior. 🙏🏽Drake
Kyle Lowry, who missed the last Raptors shot in Game 5, came to the defense of the fans that were cheering when Durant went down.
“I don’t think the fans knew the significance of the injury,” he said. “They kind of [had] just seen he went down. In this league, we’re all brothers. At the end of the day, we’re all brothers and it’s a small brotherhood and you never want to see a competitor like him go down.”
