Is Taz Bentii Canada’s Next Breakout Rapper? Ottawa Artist Talks Big Heff, DJ Holiday and “REALEST”

Ottawa recording artist Taz Bentii believes Canada’s capital has the talent to become a recognized hip-hop market—but it needs an artist capable of breaking internationally and bringing those opportunities home.

During a new interview with WorldWide Entertainment TV Media, the 21-year-old rapper discussed his mission to represent Ottawa, the artist development he has received from veteran music executive Quincy “Big Heff” Taylor, and the support of influential Atlanta figure DJ Holiday.

The conversation arrives during the campaign surrounding Taz Bentii’s project The Kid From Ottawa and his song “REALEST.”

Can Ottawa Become Canada’s Next Major Hip-Hop City?

Although Toronto has become internationally associated with Canadian hip-hop and R&B, Taz wants Ottawa to develop an identity of its own.

Play

He believes the city is missing a staple artist who can achieve success, return home and help create opportunities for other Ottawa performers.

That goal is reflected in the title The Kid From Ottawa. Instead of separating his ambitions from his hometown, Taz has made Ottawa central to his story.

During the interview, he acknowledged that artists from smaller Canadian markets frequently feel pressured to leave home before the industry takes them seriously. His own career has already taken him through Toronto and several American markets, but he remains determined to keep Ottawa attached to his name.

The mission is not simply to become an artist from Canada. It is to help establish Ottawa as a city capable of producing nationally and internationally recognized talent.

The Story Behind “REALEST”

Taz Bentii also discussed “REALEST,” the record he recommends as the starting point for listeners discovering his music.

The song represents the confidence, personal perspective and melodic delivery that have become central to his sound. It also reflects his desire to create music that listeners can connect with beyond a single trend or moment.

Throughout the interview, Taz described wanting to become what he called a “comfort artist”—someone whose music people return to because they recognize themselves in it.

That ambition places “REALEST” at the center of his current campaign while introducing audiences to the larger story behind The Kid From Ottawa.

Big Heff’s Role in Developing Taz Bentii

One of the most revealing sections of the interview concerns Taz Bentii’s work with Big Heff.

Big Heff has spent years working in artist development, radio promotion, touring and regional marketing. Taz explained that their relationship involves considerably more than having a recognizable executive attached to his name.

The development process has included intensive travel, radio appearances, interview preparation, networking and live performances. During one promotional run, Taz described moving through approximately 10 cities in five days while completing more than 20 interviews.

That experience taught him how much work happens away from the recording studio.

Big Heff has also encouraged Taz to control the spontaneous energy that defines his personality. According to Taz, Heff once compared that unpredictable energy to Machine Gun Kelly, another artist whose rise involved relentless touring and regional promotion.

The relationship demonstrates an older artist-development strategy still being applied in the streaming era: physically visiting markets, building relationships with DJs and introducing the artist directly to new audiences.

Meeting DJ Holiday at SXSW

Taz’s relationship with DJ Holiday began after performing on Holiday’s stage during SXSW.

DJ Holiday is closely associated with Atlanta’s mixtape history and has worked across multiple generations of Southern hip-hop. His support gave Taz an important connection to the American music industry while reinforcing the artist’s belief that his sound cannot be limited to one category.

Taz explained that Holiday sees him as more than a conventional rapper. His music moves between melodic records, introspective songwriting and energetic performances rather than remaining inside one defined lane.

That relationship eventually produced “CALI” featuring DJ Holiday, a record released ahead of The Kid From Ottawa that helped build momentum around the project.

For Taz, the collaboration represents both a musical co-sign and a connection to the mixtape culture that helped introduce countless hip-hop artists before streaming became dominant.

Working With TVGUCCI and Appearing on On The Radar

Taz Bentii’s developing résumé also includes a collaboration with Toronto artist TVGUCCI on the song “DNA.”

Because TVGUCCI is associated with the broader OVO ecosystem, the collaboration gave Taz another connection to Toronto’s established music industry. Taz described the moment as meaningful because he grew up looking toward artists such as Drake as examples of how Canadian talent could reach international audiences.

He later appeared on On The Radar, performing in a setting designed to place an artist’s delivery and presence at the center of the presentation.

Taz credited that appearance with helping introduce more listeners to his music, including his song “Animal Fries.”

Building an Audience Across the United States

While maintaining Ottawa as his identity, Taz has been actively developing relationships in the United States.

His promotional activity has included stops in Cleveland, Kentucky, Atlanta, Florida and New York. One Midwest run covered approximately 2,500 kilometres and 10 cities in only five days.

During the WWETV Media interview, Taz compared the Canadian and American music industries and discussed the importance of physically entering different markets.

That grassroots approach remains valuable even as artists increasingly rely on short-form videos, streaming playlists and social-media algorithms. Radio interviews, performances and face-to-face networking allow an emerging artist to build relationships that cannot always be created through online promotion alone.

Taz Bentii Clarifies His YOWFEST Appearance

Taz also addressed his previously announced appearance at YOWFEST.

Although his name appeared in promotional material for the Ottawa event, he clarified during the interview that the appearance ultimately did not go through.

The clarification is important because earlier coverage and event listings could leave audiences with the impression that Taz performed at the festival.

Is Taz Bentii Next Out of Canada?

Taz Bentii remains in the development stage of his career, but he is assembling several important pieces: a defined hometown identity, experienced management, an American promotional network and industry relationships with figures such as DJ Holiday and Big Heff.

His challenge will be converting those relationships and promotional appearances into a record that reaches listeners far beyond Ottawa.

With “REALEST” serving as his introduction and The Kid From Ottawa establishing his identity, Taz is positioning himself as an artist who wants to break internationally without disconnecting from the city that produced him.

Whether he becomes Canada’s next breakout rapper remains to be seen. What is already clear is that Taz Bentii wants Ottawa included in the conversation.
