Whitney Houston’s influence is reaching a new generation as the legendary singer has officially been honored with her first-ever Barbie doll.

Mattel released the Barbie Signature Whitney Houston Doll on August 9, 2026, a date that would have marked Houston’s 63rd birthday. The collectible recreates one of the superstar’s most recognizable looks from the colorful 1987 music video for her chart-topping classic “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).”

The tribute arrives during a milestone period celebrating 40 years of Houston’s recording legacy.

Rather than attempting to represent Houston’s entire career with one design, Mattel went directly to the era that helped establish her as one of the biggest pop stars in the world.

The doll features Houston’s voluminous 1980s hairstyle along with the purple dress, colorful drop earrings and vibrant makeup associated with the “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” video. A microphone stand completes the performance-inspired presentation.

The song became one of Houston’s signature recordings after its 1987 release and is among the 11 singles she took to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 during her career. Those chart-toppers have also been brought together for the new WH1TNEY collection released as part of the latest celebration of her legacy.

A Whitney Houston Doll Was 20 Years in the Making

The Barbie tribute also has a history that stretches back much further than its 2026 release.

Pat Houston, Whitney Houston’s sister-in-law and executor of her estate, revealed that conversations about creating a Mattel doll began approximately two decades ago.

At the time, Houston herself was interested in developing a doll connected to The Bodyguard, the 1992 film that transformed her from a global music superstar into a major Hollywood leading lady. The idea never reached production during Houston’s lifetime, but the concept remained alive.

That history makes the 2026 release more than a posthumous licensing project. It represents the completion of an idea Houston had personally considered years earlier.
