N.O.R.E.’s attorney has responded to Carmen Bryan’s lawsuit with a categorical denial of her allegations.

The legal dispute between Carmen Bryan and veteran Queens rapper and Drink Champs host N.O.R.E. now has an on-the-record response from his side.

Bryan has filed a civil lawsuit accusing N.O.R.E., whose legal name is Victor James Santiago Jr., of sexually assaulting her during a music-industry event in Manhattan in 1999.

N.O.R.E. denies the allegation.

In a statement attributed to attorney Leonard F. Lesser of Simon Lesser PC, Santiago’s legal team called Bryan’s allegations “entirely false” and said it intends to defend him against the lawsuit.

The response represents a significant development following widespread reporting of Bryan’s complaint by outlets including Billboard, Rolling Stone and Pitchfork.

What Carmen Bryan alleges happened in 1999

According to the lawsuit obtained by multiple publications, Bryan alleges she encountered N.O.R.E. during an event connected to the promotion of his 1999 album Melvin Flynt – Da Hustler.

Bryan, who reportedly worked as a finance officer for Rush Management at the time, alleges Santiago sexually assaulted her inside the Manhattan nightclub.

The complaint alleges that she repeatedly told him to stop and that other people eventually intervened.

Bryan further alleges that Santiago followed her outside afterward and only then recognized who she was.

These claims are allegations contained in a civil lawsuit and have not been proven in court. Santiago disputes Bryan’s account.

Pitchfork reports that Bryan sent Santiago a pre-suit settlement request in March before filing the lawsuit. The publication reported that Santiago had maintained that he did not know Bryan.

N.O.R.E.’s attorney calls allegations “entirely false”

N.O.R.E.’s legal team is now going considerably further.

In the statement provided in response to the allegations, attorney Leonard F. Lesser says:

“The allegations by Ms. Bryan about invented interactions with Mr. Santiago from nearly three decades ago are entirely false.”

The attorney’s statement then attacks Bryan’s credibility, pointing specifically to books she published in 2006 and 2018.

According to Lesser, neither publication mentioned Santiago or contained an account resembling the alleged 1999 incident.

That is an argument being advanced by Santiago’s defense, rather than an independent determination about Bryan’s credibility.

The statement concludes by saying the legal team intends to defend Santiago against what it describes as a groundless lawsuit and challenge Bryan’s allegations in court.

Bryan’s attorney says she is seeking accountability

Her attorney, Heather Palmore, told Pitchfork that Bryan came forward to seek accountability for what she alleges happened to her and to challenge attitudes that diminish women’s bodily autonomy.

That leaves the two sides presenting fundamentally incompatible versions of events.

Bryan alleges she was sexually assaulted.

Santiago, through his attorney, says the alleged interaction was fabricated.

The litigation will now determine what evidence each side can produce in support of those positions.

Why the timing of Bryan’s previous books could become part of the dispute

One of the more notable components of N.O.R.E.’s response is the emphasis his attorney places on Bryan’s previous published accounts of her life.

Bryan is known publicly in part through her past relationship with Nas and has previously written about her experiences within the entertainment industry.

N.O.R.E.’s attorney argues that the absence of the allegation from those books undermines her present account.

But the absence of an allegation from an earlier memoir does not by itself establish whether an alleged assault did or did not occur.

It is instead one of the credibility arguments N.O.R.E.’s legal team says it intends to raise as the litigation proceeds.

N.O.R.E. lawsuit now has two competing accounts

The development is important because early coverage of the lawsuit necessarily focused heavily on Bryan’s allegations.

N.O.R.E.’s response now establishes his legal position clearly:

He denies the alleged assault occurred and intends to contest Bryan’s claims in court.

That distinction matters when covering a lawsuit involving serious allegations.

At this stage, there has been no judicial finding that N.O.R.E. sexually assaulted Carmen Bryan. Likewise, his attorney’s denial does not resolve the underlying factual dispute.

The claims and defenses remain to be tested through the civil legal process.
