Mopreme Shakur Named Potential Tupac Trial Witness

Tupac Shakur’s stepbrother has been included among more than 200 potential witnesses as Duane “Keffe D” Davis prepares to stand trial in Las Vegas.

Maurice “Mopreme” Shakur could become part of the long-awaited criminal trial over the 1996 killing of his stepbrother, Tupac Shakur.

The Clark County District Attorney’s Office has filed a 16-page supplemental list identifying more than 200 potential witnesses in the case against Duane “Keffe D” Davis. Local Las Vegas reports say the list includes Mopreme, Tupac’s sister Sekyiwa Shakur, cousin Katari Cox, former Death Row Records CEO Marion “Suge” Knight, former LAPD detective Greg Kading and other law-enforcement, family and expert witnesses.

Mopreme’s inclusion does not mean he will definitely take the stand. A potential-witness list preserves the prosecution’s ability to call people during the case, but many of the names may never testify.

Mopreme Shakur Hopes the Trial Reveals the Truth

In comments published by The Associated Press ahead of the trial, Mopreme described the last three decades as exhausting and stressful for the Shakur family. He said sitting through the proceedings would reopen the trauma, but he remains cautiously optimistic that justice could emerge.

“I hope that the trial is fair, and we find out the truth,” Mopreme told the AP.

He also acknowledged the painful limit of any courtroom outcome: no verdict can bring Tupac back.

The remarks appear in the AP’s written report. No corresponding public video has been released showing Mopreme delivering those particular comments on camera.

Keffe D’s Trial Is Scheduled to Begin August 10

Davis, 63, has pleaded not guilty to one count of murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang. Prosecutors allege that he orchestrated the September 7, 1996 drive-by shooting near the Las Vegas Strip and supplied the weapon used in the attack.

Tupac was riding in a BMW driven by Suge Knight when a white Cadillac pulled beside them and gunfire erupted. Tupac died six days later at age 25. Knight survived.

The prosecution’s case is expected to rely heavily on Davis’s public interviews, his 2019 memoir Compton Street Legend and a recorded 2008 police interview. Davis’s attorneys unsuccessfully argued that the memoir was fictionalized and that the police discussion was protected by an immunity arrangement.

The trial is scheduled to begin Monday, August 10, in Clark County District Court and is expected to last approximately four weeks. The state will attempt to prove that Davis organized the shooting; the proceeding may not establish who actually fired the fatal shots.

A Family Member Could Now Enter the Case as a Witness

Mopreme has spent years publicly questioning how Tupac’s killing was investigated and calling for greater accountability. His presence on the prosecution’s potential-witness list creates a new possibility: a member of the Shakur family could speak inside the criminal proceeding that took nearly 30 years to reach trial.

The list also reportedly includes Sekyiwa Shakur and Suge Knight, who was beside Tupac when the shooting occurred. Their inclusion does not guarantee testimony, and the court may still decide how certain witnesses can appear.

Mopreme has separately pursued answers through a wrongful-death lawsuit filed against Davis and unnamed alleged co-conspirators. That civil action is distinct from the Nevada criminal prosecution.
