Brandy Sings New A Different World Theme for Netflix Sequel

The Grammy-winning singer brings a new sound to the beloved Hillman College anthem as Netflix prepares to introduce a new generation on September 24.

Netflix has chosen Brandy to perform a reimagined version of the iconic A Different World theme song for its upcoming sequel series.

The announcement brings together two major pieces of Black television history. Before becoming an R&B star known as “The Vocal Bible,” Brandy grew into a television favorite as the face and voice of Moesha. Now, she is carrying another defining Black sitcom theme into a new generation.

Netflix shared a first look at Brandy recording the familiar song in the studio on August 11. Her rendition retains the classic lyrics while introducing a fresh arrangement designed for the new series.

“Singing this iconic theme song for A Different World means everything to me,” Brandy told Netflix’s Tudum, explaining that she watched the original series whenever it aired.

Brandy Joins a Legendary Theme-Song Lineage

The choice comes with history attached. A Different World premiered on NBC in 1987 and followed students finding their identities, relationships and purpose at the fictional HBCU Hillman College.

Phoebe Snow performed the theme during the first season. Aretha Franklin delivered the best-known version from Seasons 2 through 5, while Boyz II Men helped close the original run with a harmony-driven rendition in Season 6.

Brandy is therefore not simply recording music for a new Netflix comedy. She is stepping into a musical tradition that helped make the opening of A Different World instantly recognizable across generations.

Her selection also feels fitting because of her place in 1990s television. Brandy starred in Moesha from 1996 to 2001 and performed that sitcom’s theme song through multiple arrangements. Moving from the voice of one era-defining Black television series to the revival of another creates a full-circle cultural moment.

WWETV’s Earlier Al Green Question Now Has an Answer

The announcement also continues a theme-song conversation already followed by WorldWide Entertainment TV Studios.

In earlier WWETV coverage, original cast member and theme co-writer Dawnn Lewis discussed an unreleased version recorded by soul legend Al Green. That revelation raised a natural question for viewers: Who should carry the song for the new generation of Hillman students?

Netflix’s answer is Brandy.

The decision bridges several eras of Black music and television without trying to erase what came before. Brandy is not replacing Franklin’s classic interpretation or the other versions that fans remember. Her recording adds another chapter to a song that has always evolved with the students shown on screen.

What the New A Different World Series Is About

The 10-episode sequel returns to Hillman College and centers on Deborah Wayne, played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon. Deborah is the youngest daughter of original-series favorites Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, portrayed again by Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy.

As Deborah begins her freshman year, she must build an identity beyond her parents’ Hillman legacy. Netflix describes the show as a single-camera, half-hour dramedy following the lives and relationships of a new generation of students.

Several familiar faces are returning, including Hardison, Guy, Dawnn Lewis, Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer, Charnele Brown, Glynn Turman, Karen Malina White and Jada Pinkett Smith. Debbie Allen, whose creative leadership helped shape the original series, returns as an executive producer and directs the premiere episode. Felicia Pride serves as showrunner and executive producer.

The new student cast includes Maleah Joi Moon, Alijah Kai, Chibuikem Uche, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall and Kennedi Reece. Method Man and Tichina Arnold are among the additional performers appearing in the series.

A Familiar Song for a New Hillman Generation

The original A Different World became more than a college sitcom. It showed Black students debating politics, friendship, class, identity and adulthood while presenting HBCU life to a national audience. Its theme song became part of that invitation into Hillman.

That makes the opening music an important creative choice for the sequel. Netflix needs to welcome longtime viewers without making the new cast feel trapped inside nostalgia. Brandy offers a credible bridge: she is familiar to the audience that grew up with A Different World and Moesha, but her layered vocal style can give the song an identity of its own.

The real test will come when fans hear the complete theme alongside the new opening credits. For now, the pairing makes cultural sense—and gives the return to Hillman a voice with her own established television legacy.

Netflix’s A Different World sequel premieres September 24, exactly 39 years after the original series debuted on NBC.
