Tyler Perry’s ‘Doing Life’ Hits Netflix as Racquel Palmer Reveals His Rapid Filming Process

Tyler Perry’s ‘Doing Life’ Follows as Fast Production Rule as Racquel Palmer Revealed

Tyler Perry has returned to Netflix with Doing Life, a new romantic drama centered on survival, second chances and an unexpected relationship formed under difficult circumstances.

The film began streaming October 2 and stars Naomi Baker as Anika, a single mother fighting to hold her family together, and Jay Reeves as Carousel, a reformed ex-convict with untapped potential. As the two exchange letters while Carousel is incarcerated, their connection gradually develops into something neither expected.

Written, directed and produced by Perry, Doing Life also features Tamberla Perry, Karen Obilom, Jasmine Sargent and Danielle Moné Truitt.

While the film introduces audiences to another emotionally driven Tyler Perry story, actress and producer Racquel Palmer recently gave WorldWide Entertainment TV a firsthand account of what performers experience while working inside his famously fast-moving production environment.

During her exclusive WWETV interview, Palmer recalled arriving at Tyler Perry Studios after working on an HBO production. She initially assumed the filming process would resemble other television and film sets—but a production assistant quickly prepared her for a different experience.

“The PA was like, ‘Do you know how he shoots?’” Palmer recalled. “And she was like, ‘No, it’s all in one shot. One.’”

That approach demands preparation, discipline and the ability to deliver without relying on numerous takes.

According to Palmer, working under those conditions helped strengthen her as a performer.

“He’s so disciplined, and what he asks of you in such a short period of time is a lot,” she explained. “It trains your instrument to be able to perform in that way.”

Palmer added that actresses who successfully adapt to Perry’s production environment develop skills that can carry them onto virtually any set.

“We say, as Tyler Perry actresses, if you’re able to perform with him, you can go perform anywhere.”

“He’s Slipping”: Palmer Jokes About Perry’s Speed

The conversation took a humorous turn when WorldWide Entertainment TV mentioned reports that Why Did I Get Married Again? was filmed in only four days.

“Four days?” Palmer responded. “Wow. I’m surprised they had that much time. He’s slipping. He could get that done in an hour.”

Although delivered as a joke, Palmer’s response underscored Perry’s reputation for maintaining an unusually efficient production schedule across film and television.

His ability to write, direct and produce projects at a rapid pace has become one of the defining characteristics of Tyler Perry Studios. It has allowed Perry to build a large catalog of original films and television series while continuing to provide opportunities for actors and production professionals.

From Working With Tyler Perry to Creating Opportunities

Palmer told WWETV that Perry’s influence extends beyond production speed. As she develops Palmer House Studios alongside her husband and creative partner, Dorsea Palmer, she has taken inspiration from Perry’s commitment to opening doors for performers who may otherwise be overlooked.

“I appreciate his vision when it comes to creating and giving actors who wouldn’t have gotten a chance to perform anyplace else an opportunity,” Palmer said.

That philosophy has become part of Palmer’s own transition from actress to writer, producer and studio co-founder.

Later in the interview, she described the satisfaction of recognizing potential in an emerging performer and offering that person an opportunity—an experience that helped her understand Perry’s position as a creator and employer.

“I would love to walk in the steps of Tyler Perry and be the female version of him,” she said, “and give other people the opportunities—the same one that he gave me.”

Doing Life joins Perry’s expanding collection of Netflix projects, including A Fall from Grace, A Madea Homecoming, A Jazzman’s Blues, Mea Culpa, The Six Triple Eight, Straw, Madea’s Destination Wedding and Ruth & Boaz.

The new film continues Perry’s focus on characters attempting to rebuild their lives while confronting economic hardship, incarceration, family responsibilities and emotional trauma.

For viewers watching another Tyler Perry production arrive on streaming, Palmer’s account provides insight into the discipline behind that level of output. His projects may arrive frequently, but the performers entering Tyler Perry Studios are expected to arrive prepared.

Tyler Perry’s Doing Life is now streaming on Netflix.
