Bellamy Bentley Explains Why “My God” Marked Her Spiritual Realignment
Gospel recording artist, worship leader, songwriter, speaker, and radio devotional host Bellamy Bentley is opening up about the musical and spiritual transformation behind her first original gospel song, “My God.”
In a new interview with WorldWide Entertainment TV, Bentley explained that her professional recording journey initially began with R&B and dance music in 2020. At the time, her songs focused primarily on love and mainstream themes rather than her relationship with God.
“There’s nothing wrong with singing about love,” Bentley explained, “but I wasn’t singing about God.”
From R&B and Dance Music to Gospel
Bentley revealed that she and her producer originally created a beat and wrote secular lyrics for the song that would eventually become “My God.” However, when she returned to prepare for the recording, she realized that the song needed to move in a different direction.
“I don’t want to do secular lyrics to this beat,” Bentley recalled telling her producer. “I want to try to do a gospel song.”
What made the moment especially meaningful was that her producer had experienced a similar change of heart. The two discovered that they had independently reached the same conclusion when they came back together months later.
“That’s why I would say it was like realignment,” Bentley said.
A New Direction for Her Music
Bentley explained that by the fall of 2025, she had decided to dedicate her music fully to gospel.
The decision represented more than a change in genre. It reflected a deeper understanding of her calling and the kind of message she wanted to share through her music.
“My God” became her first original gospel release and established a new direction for Bentley as an artist. While the song carries a gospel message, it also incorporates a modern hip-hop-influenced beat, allowing it to reach listeners who may not traditionally seek out gospel music.
Bentley said she wants her music to reach believers and non-believers alike.
“I hope that it piques their curiosity,” she explained. “I want them to want to know who is this God that Bellamy serves.”
Gospel Music Can Move Beyond Tradition
Bentley also discussed her belief that gospel music can embrace modern sounds, including hip-hop, R&B, EDM, and dance music, without losing its spiritual purpose.
For Bentley, the message and the heart behind the music are more important than the style of the production.
“It’s about the words,” she said. “It’s about who you’re worshiping. It’s not just about the beats.”
That philosophy is also reflected in her latest releases, including “Throw Down” and “Holy Forever / Agnus Dei.” Her music combines traditional worship themes with contemporary energy, creating space for both quiet reflection and joyful celebration.
A Message of Hope
Beyond her music, Bentley uses devotional content and radio appearances to encourage people who feel overlooked, delayed, or uncertain about their future.
Her central message is rooted in hope, patience, and trust in God’s timing. She believes that seasons of silence can also be seasons of preparation.
Bentley’s story—from being born in Haiti and adopted by a French-Canadian family, to discovering her calling through church worship, stepping away from music, and eventually returning with renewed purpose—has become part of the testimony behind her music.
For Bentley, “My God” is not simply a song. It represents the moment she recognized that her music needed to align with the message she carried inside.
“There’s hope and there’s a God out there that loves you more than you can ever imagine,” Bentley said. “Keep trusting and He will carry you.”
