Kama Met Rihanna in Toronto Before She Became a Global Superstar

Before the hit records, international tours and Fenty business empire, Rihanna was an unknown teenage artist attempting to introduce her Caribbean sound to the world.

Toronto was part of that earliest chapter—and WWETV’s Kama was there.

In an archival WorldWide Entertainment TV interview, Kama recalls crossing paths with a young Rihanna in Toronto before he knew her name or understood that Jay-Z had just helped launch her career.

It was only after seeing Rihanna on television that he realized the young woman he had encountered was the same emerging artist everyone was beginning to discuss.

“That was that same girl,” Kama recalled.

Kama Did Not Know Who Rihanna Was

The power of Kama’s story comes from how ordinary the encounter initially appeared.

Rihanna had not yet become the instantly recognizable celebrity she is today. To Kama, she was simply a young Caribbean woman moving through Toronto with other people.

During their conversation, he asked about singer Amerie—not realizing that he was speaking with the artist who would soon become one of the biggest names of her generation.

The significance of the encounter became clear later, when Kama learned that Jay-Z had signed a new singer from Barbados. After seeing Rihanna appear on television, he finally connected the two moments.

The unknown young woman he had met in Toronto was Rihanna.

Toronto Was Part of Rihanna’s Beginning

Kama’s firsthand memory fits into a larger, documented connection between Rihanna’s earliest career and Toronto.

The music video for her debut single, “Pon de Replay,” was filmed in Toronto when Rihanna was 17. Canadian filmmaker Director X shot the video inside the former Avocado restaurant and intentionally surrounded the Barbadian singer with people who understood Toronto’s West Indian culture.

Director X later explained that Toronto was not widely recognized internationally as a major Caribbean city at the time. He wanted Rihanna’s first video to carry that cultural energy, according to his recollection published by iHeartRadio Canada.

Kama’s story represents a separate firsthand memory from that same early Toronto period. It demonstrates how close Rihanna was to the city’s Caribbean community before the rest of the world knew her name.

Toronto was also where a young Drake first encountered Rihanna during the “Pon de Replay” era. Drake later recalled that meeting while presenting Rihanna with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards, as reported by TIME.

From Barbados to Def Jam

Rihanna arrived from Barbados carrying a sound rooted in dancehall, reggae and Caribbean club culture.

After auditioning for Jay-Z—then the president of Def Jam Recordings—she secured a recording contract in 2005. “Pon de Replay” became her international breakthrough and introduced her musical identity to audiences around the world.

That history makes Kama’s encounter more than a funny celebrity story. It captures a narrow moment between discovery and superstardom, when Rihanna could still walk through Toronto without everyone immediately recognizing her.
