Jhené Aiko is officially back.

The R&B singer released her new album Westside Whimsy on Friday, September 11, marking her first full-length studio project in six years — and she brought an old collaborator along for the return.

Kendrick Lamar appears on the new song “So Good,” reuniting two artists whose creative history stretches back to before they became household names.

Pitchfork reported that the collaboration continues a musical relationship that dates to Kendrick Lamar’s 2010 mixtape Overly Dedicated. The two later reunited on “Stay Ready (What a Life),” from Aiko’s 2013 Sail Out EP.

That history gives “So Good” more significance than the typical high-profile album feature.

Jhené Aiko Returns Six Years After Chilombo

Westside Whimsy follows Aiko’s 2020 album Chilombo.

The new project contains 20 tracks and finds the Los Angeles singer returning to familiar collaborators while also bringing several prominent West Coast voices into the album.

Along with Kendrick Lamar, the project includes appearances from Ab-Soul, Larry June and Tyga.

The album has been described as deeply connected to Aiko’s Los Angeles roots, making the Kendrick reunion particularly fitting.

Both artists emerged from the same broader Los Angeles music ecosystem before developing dramatically different careers.

Kendrick Lamar and Jhené Aiko Go Back More Than a Decade

Longtime listeners may remember Kendrick appearing on “Stay Ready (What a Life)” in 2013, shortly after good kid, m.A.A.d city transformed his career.

But their connection actually reaches further back.

Aiko appeared during Kendrick’s Overly Dedicated era in 2010, years before she released her own debut studio album and before Kendrick became one of the defining rappers of his generation.

That makes “So Good” something of a full-circle collaboration.

More than a decade after their early work together, both return to the same record as established artists with extensive catalogs behind them.

Their voices also appeared on Playboi Carti’s 2025 song “Backd00rs,” although “So Good” represents a more direct continuation of their own collaborative history.

A Major R&B Return

Aiko’s six-year absence between studio albums makes Westside Whimsy one of Friday’s more notable R&B releases.

Rather than simply attempting to recreate the sound of her previous era, the album reconnects Aiko with Los Angeles while bringing together artists representing different generations and corners of the West Coast.

And for longtime fans, the Kendrick Lamar appearance provides one of the project’s biggest moments.

More than 15 years after their musical paths first crossed, Jhené Aiko and Kendrick Lamar have found their way onto the same record again.
